i forgot...

i neglected to write about two very funny/scary things that have happened down here in the past few weeks.

first, i got to be in DC for a historic metro event, that being a train derailment! during rush hour! on one of the most used lines! 6th time a train has derailed in 30 years! good thing i don't ride the metro home from work. then on friday, 2 metro stations shut down due to lack of power (the escalators are so long at those stations and there was too much electricity being used for those and for air conditioning due to the heat wave). THEN there were fires at some stations because some circuits shorted. fun stuff!

second, last saturday i took the metro down to pentagon city to go shopping. k, e and i had gone to lunch and then parted ways at the metro. kev and i planned to go to sketchway later that afternoon. so i go to the mall (it was a bust, btw), come back, and eliz and i decided to snuggle up and watch the devil wears prada. i lost track of time (and my phone), and suddenly hear frantic knocking at the door. its kevin. he's freaking out because he thought i'd gone missing on the way to/from the mall. i track down my phone and find text messages, missed calls and voicemails from him saying "where are you??" "are you ok?" etc etc.

i think its cute that he was concerned--but i'm still laughing about it :-)

caught in the rain

it rains so much here. i don't know if it's normal or not, but it seems like it rains a lot more than it should. i think today's storm is the 5th or 6th that has happened since i've been here. it was raining pretty hard on my walk home, but it was actually pretty nice because for once it wasn't muggy and i wasn't sweating through my clothes by the time i got back. my hair did curl up a lot, which wasn't very cute. after the storm ended, it got really cool outside and there wasn't much humidity. it was perfect!

this weekend the roomies were gone so it was just kev and i. on saturday we went to the postal museum (boring, never go there) and then headed up to the zoo! i loved the flamingos. we didn't get to see the panda because he was sleeping, but we only walked around part of the park, so there's always the next time.saturday night kev came over and we ate dinner together, and then we went for a walk on the national mall to do a tour of the monuments at night. it was muggy. and rainy. read: my hair ballooned up to like 5x it's normal size and curl. it wasn't pretty. but, it was really fun and something not everyone gets to do.

one last thing--there was a fire "emergency" at work today, and since i was on my way out to lunch anyway i just grabbed my wristlet at left my purse in my office. we had to take the stairs down, and i slowly came to realize that there might actually be a fire, and that it wasn't a false alarm like the previous times...and well, just read this convo i'm having with kevin.

kwenzel: how was work? did your longchamp burn?
me: nary, i'm so glad. i was like, on the third floor on the way out and i thought, "oh crap...what if this is for real? THEY DON'T MAKE THAT BAG ANYMORE!!"

see where my priorities are?

this one's for my avid reader mrs. c

ayyyyyyyyyyyy a week has gone by already? i can't believe i've already been here 3 weeks. that means only 8 weeks left! every day i find myself getting more and more annoyed by tourists (learn how to ride the metro and use the crosswalks, people) and getting more and more used to the constant sounds of the sirens outside each day. i can't believe there are THAT many fires around here...

hmmm well this past week we've done and seen lots of things. the heat wave over the weekend kept me inside a lot, which was fine because i wanted to read my awesome book! last night me and the roomies went to georgetown again and got yummy cupcakes, did a lil shopping and went to eat at a little french restaurant. the restaurant was aight...it couldn't have been a little cheaper and had more selection (soda would be a start), but it was still cute and we had fun anyway. it was a little detour from our usual routine of coming home, putting on pj's and chilling/destressing from work.

we finally made it to adams morgan AND u street over the weekend. although we got lost both times, it was still really fun and i'm excited to go explore again. there are so many places to go out to!

one weird thing before i go--kev and i went to safeway (sketchway) to get groceries, and basically everything that was supposed to be cold in the store...wasn't. the frozen foods were melting in the freezer, and all of the cheese and butter shelves were empty. SO SKETCHY.

i'm dragging kevin to the national postal museum this weekend...check back for some great stories! haha.

blogging is the new poetry

this is comforting.

also, note to self: i need to start eating breakfast. crystal light energy water just doesn't do the trick. also, never buy lunch from to market to market again. ten dollars is just too much to pay for a little salad and fruit. then again, i guess i just don't know how much a pound actually is.

one last thing, from stuff hill people like:
"Despite the provision of Capitol Hill Fun Time by tourists, their presence still causes deep insecurities to bubble up among Hill People. Tourists, with their lemming-like manners, digital cameras, and CIA shirts, subconsciously remind Hill People of what they used to be, long, long ago (aka two months prior when they first moved to Washington, after spending the summer after college backpacking through Europe). After all, when they were new to DC, they didn't know the quadrant system, where the White House is, or that you should ABSOLUTELY NEVER stand on the left side of the Metro escalator. Deep down, Hill People remember this version of themselves, and it makes them absolutely sick. Therefore, they project this self-hatred of their former self on to tourists."

my thoughts exactly.

when it rains, it tornadoes

(this picture was taken in between storms. its the intersection of K St. and Washington Circle, right outside of our apartment)

my roommates just ventured out in what looks like the beginnings of a hurricane to get ice cream at a new place all the way up on P street. i opted to stay in, sitting right next to the windows. the storm is nothing new, it's the 3rd torrential downpour we've experienced in our short week and half here. hill workers were told to stay indoors and avoid windows today. a tornado or two struck arlington and somewhere close by in maryland. pleasant, huh? apparently hillary summoned the tornado (wonkette is like my new favorite blog now).

speaking of wonkette, i just now discovered a 4 year old scandal that happened in dc, and apparently wonkette was the one who broke the story. go HERE for more info, and prepare to spend at least 20 minutes reading.

speaking of reading, i bought the book "boomsday" yesterday and i'm already loving it. i orginally went to b&n to pick up the new book by lauren weisberger (of the devil wears prada fame) but alas, they were sold out. libby mentioned boomsday at work and i decided to get it instead. good choice for me. i love reading books about PR people, fictional as they all might be. its about a girl who blogs about how to end the social security nightmare...told in a funny, satirical way. its funny that i found the washingtonienne and this book right at the same time...

(this is another view from the same window as the picture above. looking east towards K St., to the left of the middle building, and Pennsylvania Avenue to the right.)

Happy Birthday Israel!

Yesterday (after church, of course) we ventured down to the national mall to attend the 60th Anniversary of Israel with more than 50,000 people. We went to see Regina Spektor perform a free concert, and it was very good. We also saw Mandy Patinkin, also known as Inigo Montoya from The Princess Bride!

So we rode the metro down, and at the Smithsonian stop, the doors remained open for 5 or so minutes (not too unusual). Then, metro people started shouting over the intercom "EVACUATE THIS TRAIN!" and we all just ran out and up the escalator. It was a madhouse. There were firemen coming down, the the metro going the other direction was stopped further back that it should have been and people were filing out of the front car. Turns out a lady jumped off the other platform and got hit by a train! Quite an eventful day.

Also, the story I was working on last week was published on our website! Check it out here. It's cool to see something I wrote in something other than the Daily Universe. And not about orchestras.
