rendezvous in nauvoo

last night my mom and i rolled into nauvoo, illinois, around 9pm. the town seems like it's stuck in the 1800s (and really, half of it is!) nauvoo is a little town just across the mississippi from iowa, and home to many LDS chuch history sites. my friend meghan is serving a mission here and i got to see her today when we stopped by the visitors center! it was good to see a familiar face along this trip. we've been driving 10 hours each day through the middle of nowhere wyoming, nebraska and iowa. it's been nice to take a break and visit this place where old people dress up in pioneer outfits and show us how life used to be. i know for sure now that i was born in the right century, however. i could not have lived here back then with layers upon layers of clothes and bonnets and malaria-infected mosquitos. off to chicago tomorrow to see the game of pit in real life, eat real deep-dish pizza and some really good steak. yummmmmm.

hello from nebraska

dear bloggybears, i'm so sorry to have been neglecting you! i GRADUATED FROM COLLEGE the other day so as you might imagine, i've been pretty busy. i'm now on a roadtrip home with my mom, and we're in north platte, nebraska at the moment. more to come later, it's late and we've got a long day ahead of us tomorrow. but for now, enjoy this video of a really neat flash mob stunt in belgium. snaps to colin b. for telling me about it!

The Promises of Rain

today is the 20something bloggers blogswap day! i was paired with alyssa who blogs over at how lucky we are. enjoy her guest post!

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

i've been listening to regina spektor for the last few days, sprinkled with some beirut, and it's been so soothing to just watch out the window as the rain pours down from the dark sky and the colours from the new buds and flowers poking up from the dirt and concrete are brought to life. i don't particularly like the rain, especially when i'm getting soaked when i don't want to, but when i'm dry and warm and behind a window, it can be magical. i love how the water soaks into the concrete and the bricks, making them darker and blending all the different bits and pieces together. the street is smudged into the sidewalks and then up into the buildings, everything becomes one huge glistening block of various shades of dark grey.
the mud is drowned and splashed around, opening up holes for the baby plants coming up for their first breath of air and unfurling their leaves to the sky. and because the world they are born into has been melted into one dark colour, they can shine theirs honestly and brilliantly. it's almost like they are being encouraged to be the best they can be from day one. first the greens. the new leaves on trees and shrubs are so bright and scream "spring," especially against the wet bark covering their hosts. during a sunny day, they might be overlooked, as they are still so tiny and unsure of themselves. there are so many, and they look all the same, there's no way to stand out in the brightness. but as soon as it rains, a chorus erupts and cheers can be heard rumbling off the branches, "welcome, you are lovely!" then the pinks! they show up after the greens have had a week or so to shine and revel in their 15 minutes. magnolias, tulips, cherries, roses, peonies, poppies, and zinnias in every shade of pink, from pale red to salmon and coral to a blushing white. each of them is clean and precise with a desire to compliment their neighbors, rather than eclipse them. then they introduce the rest of the colours by coaxing them out with promises of praise and acceptance. the yellows and purples, with a few blues and reds, start to push their way through the green once they're sure of their hue. like fireworks, they pop up between the pinks and whatever other blooms happen to be around. sometimes they are surrounded by family, sometimes they are one in another group, but nobody is inhospitable. there is no judgement, only appreciation and admiration. and while all the petals and little buds are busy smiling and laughing with each other, the rain keeps on falling for them. they drink up the spring and encourage happiness, hope for the coming months, and they grow strong on love.

and when the sun comes out, and the flowers dry their skin in the warmth, nature's fresh perfume fills the air until summer, when the spring flowers give way to the savory and bold lilacs, crysanthemums and lilies.
not to mention long, soft grass. the one thing i can't wait for is the day i can lay in the grass with a good book and listen to the birds and feel the sun on my arms and legs. maybe i'll have a picnic.

Growing Up, Day 16: It's Just A Fact

Fact: Britney Spears is back

girlfriend put on an amazing show the other night. i really can't explain how much fun it was, just dancing and singing along like a 13 year old girl again. the concert had some crazy stuff going on and in between sets there were some really good circus tricks/acrobats/performers keeping us more than entertained. we had amazing seats, thanks to my quick finding of the pre-sale code way back in december. i'm so glad i got to celebrate my end-of-collegeness this way! it was perfecttttt. if you want to pretend you were there with me, check out all my videos on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/turrific

Fact: Tumbling gyms are fun. And sometimes deadly.

last night a bunch of my friends and i went to the tumbling gym down the street for a little
finals stress relief. we had the gym just for our group for an hour and half, which was plenty of time for trampoline jumping, sumo wrestling, cartwheel-doing and foam pit clobbering. the one thing everyone wanted to try was the bungee harness, which only looks fun when you're NOT on it. one flip and a couple of cross-room bungees later, i ended up with these SWEET rug burns because i failed (or certain people failed to tell me...) to jump at a certain time. it's alright though, i'm tough. battle wounds, right? i'll have some sweet scabs for the summer, sure to make a fashion statement. you should try it.

Growing Up, Day 14: Rewarding Myself

My reward for getting through this week and taking a monstrous, deadly economics final at 7am on Friday? An afternoon matinee Zac Efron squeal-fest with my best girls.
A movie with Troy Bolton AND Chandler Bing? I'm there.

My other reward is happening tonight. The greatest show on earth featuring the one and only Queen of Pop, Miss Britney Spears (an entire post is forthcoming, obviously)!!! This reward is for making it through college. I just attended my last college class EVER, and now i'm just sitting here trying to pass the time until 5:30 when alex will pick me up for the concert. I've prepared myself with 8 camera batteries and also knowing that i will probably lose my voice. But it will be soooooo worth it. I'll be tweeting and twitpic-ing the night away, so follow me @tara_lane. you know you want to.

Growing Up, Day 13: I FAILED

hello bloggybears, i've failed at NaBloPoMo. Only 10 days in. what can i say, blogging on the weekends is hard. i'm mad at myself for being lazy and also uncreative. i feel like i'm running out of steam and there's not a lot leftover for anything extra. the last day of class of my college career is tomorrow. every day that inches toward graduation is one less day i have to spend with the people i've grown to love and adore over the past 4 years. it's the strangest mix of emotions. i'm dreading the morning of april 25th. i need a hug.

in other news, i recieved a shipment from the beatuy gods last week, otherwise known as sephora.com. to be honest, i only got stuff because i got a free full-sized eyeliner with my order. the eyeliner was worth more than my entire order. the eyeliner is so-so, not my favorite. but the other thing i got is amazing. beyond amazing. STELLAR.

meet juice beauty's "blemish be gone" serum. i was really skeptical of it at first. i only really got it to get the free eyeliner. after using it, i've been recommending it to everyone. it's like a magic blemish potion that makes things disappear before they even show up. it's just a roll-on thingamajig that takes zero skill. an added bonus is that it evens out skintone, which is another thing i desperately need. AND it doesn't dry out your skin! ka-chingggg. interested? get yours here: blemish be gone!

one more thing: i'm on the hunt for a new tinted moisterizer. if you have any suggestiongs, please let me know!

Growing Up, Day 10; 90s music

sometimes i do not-so-grown up things, like listen to really old school BSB, NSYNC and other 90s music and just sing my heart out. sometimes my friends join in. last night's 1am dance party turned in to just that. my face hurt from laughing and smiling all night long. love my friends <3

Growing Up, Day 9; Where Are They Now?

i'm pooped. soooo ready for school to be over. 1 more day of class to go, and then 2 finals after that!! freedom is near. because i'm tired, i'm not doing a real post today. instead, i will leave you with a post from ohnotheydidnt about child stars of the TGIF days. you know, people i grew up with. where are they now, you wonder? click to find out!

topanga, three little girls (full house), and some other irrelevants this way...

Growing Up, Day 7: Let's Get Some Shoes!

it's no secret that i love shoes.

especially when they're on sale!

i'm particularly obesessed with flats. everyone teases me about it. my friend sarah often comes over to raid my closet and can't get over how many pairs of flats i have? what can i say, they're comfortable, ok? i think i can trace it back to the pair that started it all, though. it was 2 1/2 years ago. the pair: gray with pink lining, sequins sewn on the outside (but not in a flashy way).

fit: perfect.

(you can kind of see them here...)

i wore those shoes into the ground. every single day i could possible wear them, i did. they matched EVERYTHING because the sequins reflected the colors i wore. i finally had to throw them away last spring when i couldn't take the hole my toe had worn into the soles. so, so sad. i think i may have even shed a tear. (definitely a moment of growing...up).

when i noticed that pair was going downhill was really when the obsession started. the need to find the perfect replacement for those perfect flats. of course i deviated from the search at points along the way and picked up some other gems. of course, most of them were bought on sale. my favorite sale story is of my brown zebra print wedges (they're close enough, ok?). i got them for $30 marked down from $130 at a little boutique in provo. i always get compliments on them. and then i promptly share that story.

i decided to count how many flats i actually have. the number? 14.
it's not THAT bad, right?? (please say yes)

here is a picture of some of my favorites.

Growing Up, Day 6: Pretty Pretty Princess

i wish i could be at home this month while doing NaBloPoMo, only because everything i want to post about "growing up" is there. all of my pictures and things i could potentially use in a post are inaccessible and i don't want to bother my parents with finding anything. i spent a lot of time over christmas break trying to find a certain set of pictures for a certain blogger, but they were nowhere to be found. so sad.

if i were home i would find the pictures from one of my teenage birthday parties (i think i was in 7th grade) where my friends and i went to a salon and got hair, nails and makeup done. i thought about this party because i've been doing my nails a lot lately and it's taking me back to that time when i was 14 and nail polish was basically my life. i seem to have reverted back to that age, because i'm all about COLORS! and GLITTER! and having funky nails. i guess it's better to get it out of my system now, pre-professional career where hot pink nails may be frowned upon, right?

i'm also really obsessed with eyeshadow, too. i don't know where it came from (now THAT brings me back to my dress-up days, but that's a whole other post). i never used to wear eyeshadow, but now it's a regular part of my makeup routine. i think it started when i tried to make my eyes brighter when i was sickly last month. anyway, just know that nail polish and makeup are AWESOME and i love being a girl and not really acting my age. now on to some pretty pictures.

(i LOVE this color)

Growing Up, Day 5: Where an Adult can be a Kid

the other day, i stumbled upon one of the best movies EVER playing on the disney channel.

MY DATE WITH THE PRESIDENT'S DAUGHTER!!!!

i think this was one of those sunday night family movies ABC used to run once in a while, that or it was a Disney Channel Original. either way, it's an amazing movie starring will ferrell friedle and that's all you really need to know. given the fact that i'm now a DC expert and practically a native, watching it this time was even more fun, if you can believe it.

MDWTPD almost rivals this gem:

starring a young, innocent pre-britney justin timberlake
and the girl that currently stars on psych.

i love cheese-tastic disney flicks. even as i continue to grow up, these movies will always have a special place in my heart. i will drop everything and watch, only because they are so rare to see on tv anyway!

now if only mtv would run this again...

i said U + ME = US.

Growing Up, Day 4: Conference Weekend

this weekend is the annual general conference for my church. basically, the president of the church and all the important people give talks on church things and everyone ends up feeling cozy and spiritual. in utah, this means everything shuts down between 10-12 and 2-4 on saturday and sunday. it's also when friends get together and have conference breakfast/brunch, wear pj's and just hang out all day. it's actually a really relaxing time and i'm really going to miss doing this with my friends (that seems to be the general feeling of everything lately).

when i was little, conference meant mom's cinnamon rolls and viewing parties, where i ended up falling asleep every time. now that i'm more grown up, i actually take the time to listen and try to take something away from the guidance of these great men and women. saturday has been good so far, and i'm sure tomorrow will be even better!

Growing Up, Day 3: Child's Play

who remembers that old game mastermind? (refresh yourself here)

anyway, i loved that game. and as i was perusing the apple website for some more game widgets yesterday, i came across a widget for a game called "codebreaker" that is basically mastermind masquerading under a different identity. even though i'm grown up, i'm still a sucker for games like this. i had mastermind in the full size AND a travel size.

i downloaded it immediately. however, i still haven't been able to beat it. it's hard!

another game i found? POP AND DROP!!

alex, remember when i played this game nonstop freshman year? now i have it right at my fingertips on my widget dashboard!

just one more reason why everyone should have a mac. you can bring back memories from your childhood with just a click. and it's all free. and easy.

one game i'd like to find in widget form? MANCALA. i rock that game (haha, i just realized that i punned that). or connect four. i'm a champ. none of this solitaire crap for me, i'm all about the old school board games. if you have any cool widgets i should be aware of, let me know. F4-ing has never been more fun.

Growing Up, Day 2: Big Decisions

the 4 o'clock hour is always really tough for me
(at least when i'm actually home).

why is it, you ask?

it's the time when i must decide between watching csi: ny OR or law and order svu.

they are two of my most favorite crime shows. it's a tough choice.

i usually end up deciding on SVU using these criteria:
  • is it an old or new episode of svu? (judged by oliva benson's hair)
  • have i seen it before?
  • is alex cabot (old ADA) on or is it the new one i don't like (casey novak)?
  • how gruesome is the crime?
if it doesn't seem to be appealing to me, i switch to csi and use this criteria:
  • is danny featured prominently in this episode?
i fall for his accent every time. and let's face it, csi has much hotter people. the only reason i suffer through csi: miami is for eric delko and the other attractive csi's. horatio caine is NOT the reason people watch that show. i hope he knows that. when given the choice, i'd rather watch a fierce CSI in a sweet lab than an aging detective sitting in a dingy precint office.

i remember the first time i saw an episode of svu, and a few years later when i saw csi: ny. i've definitely done some GROWING UP since then, and my tastes have changed a lot. but i'll always be a sucker for crime shows, especially when there are 24 hour marathons on almost every weekend.

the downside? i'm now terrified of living alone. and afraid of the dark.

guess i haven't grown up that much.

(p.s. if you are wondering, today i chose to watch csi. i've already seen the SVU episode a million and a half times.)

Growing Up: Day 1.5

Growing Up: Day 1

so i'm doing NaBloPoMo this month. further explanation will follow.

for now, enjoy this clip from last week's 30Rock where we found out liz lemon had an acting career before TGS. she's definitely GROWN UP since her 1-900-OK FACE days! ("that's not even enough numbers!")
