random thoughts

i've seen this making the rounds in the blogosphere, and wanted to get in on it too. have you been sent this e-mail yet? i haven't, so i had to google it. if anyone gets it...please send it to me (e-mail is on the left)! i've seen so many different (yet incomplete) versions of the same thing, and i want to see it all at once. here are my favorites...

  • I wish Google Maps had an “Avoid Ghetto” routing option (i regularly reroute manually to avoid these situations. i.e. Harrisburg, PA. and the west side of Rochester)
  • I totally take back all those times I didn’t want to nap when I was younger. (sunday naps have gone from a hassle to a necessity)
  • Do you remember when you were a kid, playing Nintendo and it wouldn’t work? You take the cartridge out, blow in it and that would magically fix the problem. Every kid in America did that, but how did we all know how to fix the problem? There was no internet or message boards or FAQ’s. We just figured it out. Today’s kids are soft. (i always just thought that everyone else did it, so i should too. do we even know why it works?)
  • Sometimes, I’ll watch a movie that I watched when I was younger and suddenly realize I had no idea what the f was going on when I first saw it. (ALL THE TIME)
  • Was learning cursive really necessary? (sometimes i practice in church when i'm bored. that, and make up my own sudoku puzzles and math problems, because i'm a nerd)
  • Answering the same letter three times or more in a row on a Scantron test is absolutely petrifying. (i think teachers do this on purpose)
  • MapQuest really needs to start their directions on #5. Pretty sure I know how to get out of my neighborhood. (however, sometimes the way i go out of my neighborhood effects my travel time!)
  • I find it hard to believe there are actually people who get in the shower first and THEN turn on the water. (cold showers...bane of my existence)
  • Whenever I’m Facebook stalking someone and I find out that their profile is public I feel like a kid on Christmas morning who just got the Red Ryder BB gun that I always wanted. 546 pictures? Don’t mind if I do! (i'm glad i'm not the only one who feels this way)
  • Can we all just agree to ignore whatever comes after DVDs? I don’t want to have to restart my collection. (blu-ray what?)
  • I’m always slightly terrified when I exit out of Word and it asks me if I want to save any changes to my ten page research paper that I swear I did not make any changes to. (i always reopen it to make sure it's all still there)
  • I like all of the music in my iTunes, except when it’s on shuffle, then I like about one in every fifteen songs in my iTunes. (that's why i have 3984723984 playlists)

the love of my life

new york was great. amtrak was actually kind of fun to ride. i talked to some funny people and had more leg room on travel excursion than i'd had in years.

john krasinski was everything i'd hoped for and more. well, the cherry would have been actually meeting him, but being 6ft. from him was good enough for now (oh, and emily blunt was there. but we don't like to talk about that).

my camera did not take good pictures, nor was i smart enough to get more than 4 secs. on video, so thanks to this person who got the best part of the Q&A on video. the question was about music for the film, and how he picked it out, and gave us an impromptu little performance. please notice the arms, the big beautiful arms...

and thanks to eliz for this picture, for remaining calm enough to get some good ones :)

surprise!

so sorry i've neglected this blog. i'm burnt out and just needed a little break to recoup. i promise to resume my duties next week.

just a little update, i'm on a surprise little jaunt to brooklyn, 2 weeks ahead of schedule (although i'm still coming back in 2 weeks, too). eliz sent me a link about john krasinski appearing at some screenings of his new movie (brief interviews with hideous men), and everything kind of fell into place to allow me to come here. so tomorrow, we'll be seeing the man himself, and the movie of course, which i'm looking forward to very much.

i have my holga and already messed up with it, but am looking forward to the pictures! i haven't used a film camera in a LONG time, so i keep forgetting to advance the film. i guess holgas are good for that though...hopefully i'm right.

see you next week lovies!

(random photo because i love cupcakes
and am going to crumbs tomorrow!)

sometimes free subscriptions aren't a good thing.

anyway, marie claire is blessed to have the fierce nina garcia on their team.

did you hear she wrote another book?

that's tomorrow's topic :)

Keep it up, boys!

doogie howser, md

so doogie howser was a little before my time (as in, i didn't watch it as a kid), but i LOVE LOVE LOVE neil patrick harris. i think he is fantastic. this love is mainly stemming from my recent obesssion with how i met your mother, and also because i just finished "dr. horrible's sing along blog," which i highly recommend if you've got 42 minutes to spare.

so i've gathered some of my favorite NPH clips for you to enjoy. i hope they make you smile as much as they did for me!

i love how so many celebs are on sesame street now!

the first song from "dr. horrible"

doogie howser theme on SNL

don't forget to catch NPH hosting the primetime emmy's on sunday sept. 20th!

osmond mania

many times, when people find out i'm mormon, the first thing they try to strike up a conversation with me about is the osmonds.

"ohhh i love donny and marie!" they all say.

i have in fact interviewed many members of the osmond clan for a few daily universe articles. at one point, i even had 3 voicemails from 3 separate osmonds.

jealous?

my aunt even attempted a devious plan at BYU to meet donny. she heard he and a brother were coming over to pick up some dates/girls from their apartment complex. my aunt pretended to be one of the girls and go on the date with him. needless to say, it didn't pan out, but it's still a fun family story. between my mom and my aunts, i'm pretty sure they have every osmond album (RECORD, yes a RECORD) ever made.

yes yes, donny and marie are well loved in this house. so well loved, in fact, that we have the dolls to prove it. we didn't buy them--we inherited them from my grandmother. it was the one thing my mom wanted, besides the miss peep. well, she only wanted donny. marie was just part of the package deal.

after we acquired these dolls, the donny doll became somewhat of a joke in my house. over winter break, i came home to donny sitting on my bed.

sometimes you could find him sitting on the railing welcoming you home.

or chilling with my cat.

or helping my mom cook.

or in the fridge.

yes, donny has had some good times in our house.

so what's the point of my story?

I'M FOLLOWING DONNY OSMOND ON TWITTER.

also, if you haven't already heard, donny will be on dancing with the stars this season.

maybe i'll have to start watching.

new york in the fall

"there is a time in new york when,
even before the first leaf falls, you can feel the seasons click.
the air is crisp, summer is gone,
and for the first night, in a long time, you need a blanket on your bed."

"After all, seasons change.
So do cites.
People come into your life and people go.
But it's comforting to know that the ones you love are always in your heart.
And if you're very lucky, a plane ride away."
(carrie bradshaw, "i heart new york")

fall has been creeping in on upstate.
last night, i needed a blanket for the first time.
i haven't seen a new york fall for a long time.
it's nice.

movin' on up, to the east sideeeee

today i made my first appointment to go see an apartment!

whew.

this is not like provo apts where they're all basically the same and you've been to so many complexes that you know where you want to be 3 years down the road. no, not like that at all.

i've been perusing listings for a while, but i never really had a set date when i could move out. i knew i needed a car, but saving for THAT and an apartment at the same time was going to take a while. now with the coming of my sweet little standy, things are looking up, big time. we've worked some finances out so that i'll have enough for both, plus some money to get me started out with everything. (thanks m & d!)

searching for a place has been somewhat frustrating due to the following:
  • i'm limiting myself to a very certain neighborhood, which can get pricey
  • i have very strict requirements: off-street parking, heat included in rent, a decent kitchen, closet and bathroom, and cats allowed (purrrr)
  • i don't know downtown rochester THAT well, so i have to keep looking up addresses every time i see one i like, and half the time it's in a part of town i don't want to be
  • there are still scammers on the real estate listings, not just the jobs!
  • people are just plain weird-- ex: "science fiction nerds encouraged to apply!" and "FREE DVD PLAYER" (it was in a bad part of town, and an overpriced STUDIO)
so let's just hope the place i'm going is halfway decent. from the listing i saw, it has everything i want and then some. it's exactly where i want to be, close to everywhere i want to be, and is just really cute.

i'll report back tomorrow!

p.s. who else is loving project runway this season??? i love christopher, shirin, and althea so far.

("althea? you're shooting with althea?"
"althea is correct!"
"nice shooting")
